You see, Under such circumstances, the accused, and the family of the accused, call for an examination by the women of the priest line (Levites)--

This examination is to determine if the woman's hymen is intact; To determine if she is a virgin or not.

If she has been sleeping around, it is a given that she would fail this examination, and the family instead opts to enforce a marriage between the individuals involved, in order to control the shame of the situation.

Joseph was going to marry Mary anyway, but was afraid that she had been sleeping around himself--- God sent him a dream telling him the situation, and Mary passed the examination, thus cementing the dream's content for Joseph, who then decided it was indeed God's will for him to marry Mary. (Bah! Mouthful!)

Long story short-- Mary had her whoowhoo examined by a bunch of creepy old ladies, in order to prove that she hadnt been sleeping around.

If she HAD been sleeping with "the mailman", she wouldnt have passed, and Joseph wouldnt have married her.
