Subject: Weeping

Come and hang your hat;
dip your feet in the water.
Today we are weeping
for your sons and daughter.

At the perimeter we stood
amazed and confused by loss
hollow and empty as driftwood.

Our words lost their color
black finality clouded the air
and obscured the future.

My brother and I took a walk;
we pulled back the covering
and peered past the bedrock.

Only a hole in the ground...
They couldn’t see it coming
for without fuss or sound
the angel took them home.

My eyes met my brother’s
the mortality reflected
was my own.
