I remember the fuzziness of the dark
being enveloped in your arms
staring at tendrils of your golden brown hair
long wavy curls falling onto your turquoise nightgown
and white lace that I gripped in my
tiny little fingers and the rosy pink walls
of my bedroom as I suckled your breasts
you rocked me back and forth, I was so comforted
a song fell from your lips, and I felt sleepy
I remember seeing you above my crib, the white walls
of your bedroom, and the white weave of my bassinette
you had curlers in your hair and placed a big blanket
woven of yarn in the colors green, orange, and brown
and placed it over me, and I stopped crying
I remember coughing over and over in my bunkbed
and then wishing I could stop and then
through the darkness, you picked me up into your arms
and carried me down the stairs into the kitchen
where you crushed up some medicine into a spoon and mixed
sugar into it, and then you carefully spooned it
into my mouth. Then you sat on the couch with me
and turned on the old fashioned lamp on the deep brown
end table, lighting a tiny corner of the room
you wrapped me in a blanket and rocked me back and forth
and I felt so warm and safe and loved. I love you mommy
