I didn't know that the word federal was banned from the EU constitution...

I think that currently the most important issue is god in the constitution. The EU's federal system is like the USA's almost 200 years ago; it still doesn't have a European identity, and many nations, such as Britain, are jealous for nations' rights and for "their being ruled by their own elected representatives." Therefore, some EU vs. nations issues are things that the USA has already resolved, or passed succesfully withuot the need to resolve. However, god and separation of church and state have never really been resolved in the USA, and therefore we need to watch for developments in the EU in that respect. Several EU nations, like Ireland, Germany, and Spain, are very religious, although not so much as the USA, and thus I think that whether the EU constitution passes successfully without god and without a fundamentalist rebellion or not is an important litmus test for whether separation of church and state can work in the USA.
