Subject: The Optima Problem 2006.5

I bought a brand new 06 Kia Optima in February, 2007. In about 2 months, and less than 3,000 miles, my engine cut out in the middle of a turn. I turned the car back on, but the check engine light was on.

I’d just gotten gas the day before, 4/19, so my first thought was that the gas cap wasn’t on tight enough. I live in Oregon where it’s illegal for me to refuel my own car, so I wasn’t the one that put the cap on.

When I got to work, I put the cap on tighter, but the check engine light was still on. I thought it might take a little bit to clear the warning, so I went in to work.

Later that same night, the check engine light finally went off, so I figured I was right. Until it happened again, and I hadn’t gotten gas or had the cap off. I still tightened the cap again, but just to make sure, I called the dealership.

They couldn’t get me in until Tuesday of the next week, 4/24, so I made the appointment. They said as long as the light wasn’t blinking, the car was safe to drive. That may be so, but who wants to drive a car with a check engine light on, let alone a brand new one with less than 3,000 miles on it.

The time for my car’s appointment came, and no more episodes, and the light was off, so I canceled the appointment, to see if it was just one of those flukes that works itself out. And it appeared to be that way, until one week later.

On 5/01, I started the car to go to work, started no problem. Less than 1/2 a mile from my place, *dead*. I live on a hill, so when the car died, I pulled off on a side road and contemplated my next move. Maybe if I turn the car off and on it’ll work… no dice. The car started, but the gas pedal didn’t respond. I could floor the pedal, and the engine would jump maybe 100 RPMs. I couldn’t even get the car to move on idle.

Many updates on my blog... http://optimaproblem.blogspot.com/
