Subject: Dumb newbie question

I've seen sites running DFT and thought "this is just what I need". When I found out it was FREE, I was even happier.
I just have one fundamental question. Michael describes DFT as a compiler for Gedcom files. So do I need another program to build my family tree in this format and DFT is just for web display purposes? Or can I build the family tree by entering data directly in DFT?
My excuses for appearing so totally ignorant. I'm not a computer newbie, just a genealogy newbie.
