I downloaded DFT this evening as well, you do need another application to create the tree in the first place. I already had one (I think its from Ancestry.com) - free, and it does what I want it to. I only have a small tree, so maybe when (if?) the database gets big it might struggle.
BTW - I think the application is great - easy to use and published my tree on the www in about 20 minutes!
