This can happen sometimes. Did you have a drought this summer? Sometimes it takes a long time for the water on the surface to get down to the level where you are pulling your water. Water is found in layers with clay or rock separating those layers.

Or maybe somebody is doing something to disturb the ground around there? Whatever the cause, most of the time it will clear by itself and there isn't much to do about it, but have patience and wait. If and after it does clear, make sure that you backwash the softener and wash the hot water heater out. Make sure you turn off the hot water heater before draining it.

If after a week or so, it isn't better, you should call a local well man.
