A less expensive way would be to keep the sand out of the well. In other words, if you don't allow sand in, you won't have to get sand out. This is the function of the wellscreen. I suggest using a 1.5 inch Schedule 40 PVC drivepoint insert with .008 inch slots -- slots that are larger than a water molecule but smaller than a grain of fine sand. Bigfoot, http://www.bigfootmfg.com/slotted-screen.html, manufactures them. Brady Products in Florida makes a cheaper version, but I don't know if the slots are small enough to keep out fine sand and silt.
