To prime a pump you need to get water from an outside source into the pump and the pipe back to the check valve. There may be a plug near the top of the pump body you can remove to get water in there.

Then you run the pump for a minute or so. When you start the pump, the water you put in will come shooting out, but that is okay because it also sucked up a little water through the pipe in the well. You fill the pump and pipe up again and you turn it on again. You may have to do this 10 times before you get a steady flow.

It's really something that someone has to show you once. Hard to learn from reading about it.
