Whenever possible, go with a sure thing, especially when the sure thing is simpler and less expensive than the other options. You know for sure that the lake has water in it. And, from what you are saying, it would not be very difficult to channel that water into the well. Since you live in Maine where there is not much chance of surface pollution from automobile emissions and factories, the water in the lake is probably rather good. The other options you mentioned are iffy. It sounds like your neighbor gave you good advice. Maybe he also has a backhoe you can borrow.
