How long have you lived there? How old is the house? Can you tell how old the pump is? What make and model?

Or it could be the the pump is old and is worn out. They can be rebuilt.

Do you see air in the water? Are you losing the prime? Those are indicators of a leak.

I think what you will discover is that rust doesn't become rust until iron comes in contact with air.

It will not hurt to change the check valve. They have a short life. It will not hurt to disassemble the pump provided that you have a new gasket handy at the store in case the old one breaks up.
