It is my job to keep track of aquifers that have become polluted and I can tell you that industry is the biggest polluter by far. Even if the do-it-yourselfer didn't give a damn, he couldn't do a fraction of the damage that industry does on a daily basis because he doesn't have access to industrial strength toxic waste. For example, there is a uranium mine on the edge of the Grand Canyon that has been polluting the local water supply since 1919 with radiation that is so egregious
that the government has had to fence off the area and post "Do Not Drink the Water" signs at watering holes. The aquifer beneath my property used to be contaminated by DDT from citrus spraying, but dropped dramatically after the pesticide was banned. The aquifer that lies below Pioneer Town near the Salton Sea is contaminated with arsenic and it certainly wasn't done by some careless homeowner. Speaking of the Salton Sea, it is dying due to sellenium that comes from the pesticides used on crops in the Imperial and Coachella Valley. And some San Bernardino (California) municipal water wells had to be shut down after being polluted by rocket fuel that seeped into the aquifer from an abandoned Rocketdyne Corporation site. Homeowners are responsible people. There is no way they are going to purposefully contaminate the aquifers from which their families get water. Industry, however, has no such compunctions. They don't live there, so they don't care. All industry cares about is profits.
