Are you sure you want to do this? I have a water well with a manual pump on it in the backyard next to a swingset and neither my grandchildren nor any of the other children who have played there have shown the slightest interest in it. Aidan, my grandson, did, however, like the two Super Soaker water shooters I bought him for Easter. So much so that I'm thinking of buying him a Slip N'Slide for his next birthday.

When it gets hot, kids enjoy playing in the sprinklers. The last thing they want to do is to pump a well. Manual pumping is hard work. I pumped at least 5 gallons per day for 15 years and it transformed me from a flat-chested 98 pound weakling into Charles Atlas (not quite, but my upper torso did become significantly stronger and - you won't believe this - it put hair on my chest).

OK, let's suppose you are determined to go through with this. I mean, maybe you want a hairy-chested grandson (or granddaughter?). It's your decision and you certainly don't need me to tell you what to do. So I will step down off my soap box and tell you what you want to know. If you have a shallow well (less than 25 feet deep), it should cost under $100 to install a wye fitting on the pipe somewhere between 18 and 30 inches below the electric pump. A wye is the same as a tee, except that it branches at a 45 degree angle rather than a 90 degree angle. When done, mount the electric pump the same way it was on the main pipe and mount the pitcher pump at the end of the wye. To make it come out right (the pitcher pump is meant to be mounted vertically) you will need a 45 degree elbow somewhere near the end of the branching wye.

Now, here's the chief drawback: Since you added several feet of pipe to the setup, the well will be more difficult to pump than it currently is. Also, you will be increasing the risk of developing a vacuum leak. But it's up to you and I certainly wouldn't want to stop you, me, or anybody else from providing their grandchildren with what could conceivably be a rich and rewarding learning experience. To tell you the truth, I don't think my daughter-in-law was thrilled with the Super Soaker. But then, I get to spoil them and she is the one who has to discipline them.
