Did the pump get hot and smell funny? That is because your electric pump was designed to pump water rather than a mixture of water, sand and dirt. In fact the number one cause of pump burnout is sand and dirt. I suggest using a manual (pitcher) pump, but most people nowadays prefer to use a large gasoline powered pump to initially develop the well. After the water starts to run steadily clear and you are satisfied with the flow you can change over to the electric pump.

Also, keep in mind that the wellscreen must be completely immersed in the aquifer plus a few feet extra in order to compensate for drawdown.
