Nothing wrong with the well. Could be something wrong with the tank. If the tank isn't "waterlogged" meaning that the cycle is too short, then there is a balancing problem.

Let's look at waterlogging first. You should have a faucet you can use. Depending on the size of the tank, you should be able to get quite a few gallons out of it before the pressure drops to where the pump turns on. But you have to observe things while they are "normal" to see if something is different now.

Is this something new? Was this happening before? Or are you a new owner and are seeing this system for the first time and think there is something wrong?

From here on, I'm assuming that you are new to this system and the tank isn't waterlogged.

The gauge shouldn't move at all when the water isn't running and if the pump isn't running.

When the sprinkler system comes on, the pressure should drop. At about 40, the pump should turn on. If the system is balanced properly in that the water being used is the same as the water being produced by the well, the pressure should stay down and the pump running until the sprinkler system goes off. When the sprinkler system goes off, then the pressure should start building until it reaches 60 (or 70 if the gauge or switch is a little off) and then the pump should turn off.

The clanks, I don't know about.

So what is wrong with the system? Pump is too powerful or not enough sprinkler heads (usage). This puts too much water in the tank so the pressure builds up until the pumps properly turns off. A pump running for a long time is not a bad thing. What wears out a pump prematurely is turning on and off.

In this case adding more sprinkler heads or a Cycle Stop Valve would solve the problem. One way expands the usage and the other reduces the input.

Or the tank can be eliminated since it isn't needed for irrigation. Very few sprinkler systems around here have tanks because it really complicates something that can be simple. Rather than the pressure switch turning the pump on and off, the sprinkler system controller box and a relay does the job.

If the tank is hot and needs replacing, consider eliminating it.
