I don't know how to fix this, but the check valve is in the wrong place and I think you knew that. Should be near the pump.

How did you decide where to stop?

If you stopped in round/beach/sugar sand or clay, then you won't get much/any water. Yo are looking for square/bar/builder's sand.

The pumps you have been trying are a little underpowered. Those volume numbers you read on the box are from zero depth.
