Your depth will depend on how easy it is to find a good spot to draw water. You are looking for a thick layer of course sand, not the ancient beach sand that water doesn't easily move through.

The way I know I am in a good spot is to get two hoses (preferably from two houses) and using good clean water so to not pollute the ground water, turn the hoses on full blast and pour as much water down the well as I can for about 5 minutes.

If it backs up, keep going down. If it doesn't, that is _probably_ a good spot, but there are no guarantees. Sometimes I keep going down only to find out thing are worse. Then I pull back up to where I was when it was better, but then I know I will probably have to make a second well and tie them together to get decent volume.

On Fred's Water Well Helpline page, you can read plenty. http://www.fdungan.com/well.htm

There is a link on that page to an installation manual from Brady Products on how to wash down a well using their products. Brady Products (before they were sold) was out of Clearwater, Florida. The manual is densely written and every page contains gems of info that you would have to ask dozens of old-timers about to get the same info.
