When it comes to above ground surface irrigation, the water is measured in inches, just like rainfall. The plant's requirement of x number of inches will determine how much has to be made up for lack of rainfall. There are all sorts of calculators on the web as to how much water turf needs, but observation I have found is best.

Around here, topsoil (which is where grass has it's roots) tends to dry out in two to three days. So if there is no rain in those days, irrigation is necessary. Observation is a good indicator. If you observe wilting, such as leaving foot prints when walked across, then it is time to water.

I have heard that turf needs at least 3/4" of water before it gets to the roots adequately, but that would depend on the type of soil as to how fast that happens.

Manufacturer's will list on their website how many inches a sprinkler head will produce at a particular pressure, but even more accurate is the "can method" where you place some cans in the grass, run the sprinklers for an hour, then measure how many inches are in the can.

The biggest problem drip systems have with wells is sand tends to jam the emitters and wells tend to have more sand than city water, although there is some in my city water. There are filters made to eliminate the sand. The ones I am familiar with are called "spin down" filters that have a "sediment trapper" in them. The way this works is that large stuff will be spun out so it doesn't clog the screen or polyester filter.

One company that makes these is Rusco:

You have to get a pretty small screen for drip. Something along the same size as if you ran a poultry farm watering system.
