Your experience with the tank is completely normal. It is designed to be used with what I call a "drinking water well" which is a low volume, high pressure well. The tank is supposed to reduce wear on the pump by storing water so that the pump doesn't come on every time a toilet is flushed. It would take a couple of toilet flushes or a long shower to use up the water in the tank, then the pump comes on and the pressure is whatever the pump can produce until the tank is full.

What you want is the opposite, high volume and most sprinkler heads are designed for 30psi, so lower pressure and you don't need a tank for that.

Your problem is volume and not enough of it for a sustained pull. You probably need to go deeper or you need a bigger pump.

When people say that 25 feet is the limit for a pump, what they mean (and never say) is the "draw down level" can't go under 25 feet. That's the level when the pump is pulling full blast.

So let's say your well is 50 feet deep. The standing water level (measured with a string and sinker) is 15 feet, but when you hook up your pump and turn it on, it drops to 22 feet and stays there -- all is good, though you won't have as much pressure as if the water was coming from a pond. But if the water drops to less than 25 feet, the water will stop.

I think what you need to do first find something called a "pump curve" for your pump. One exists, but it may be hard to track it down. Most pumps purchased in a Big Box Store don't come with one. The curve is just a chart that shows that pulling from x feet deep, the pump SHOULD produce y gallons of water per minute. This will tell you if the pump is too small. But just putting a larger pump on there may not fix your problem if the well drawdown level goes down too far.

So look in the instructions for a diagram like that. If it isn't there, look at the website for the company that built the pump. Not there? Call the pump manufacturer and ask for one.

Some people buy their pumps at "pump stores" and pay extra for a better built pump and they will usually get good advice there and the advice is coming from that curve. We have them around here in rural areas.
