Birthday honours for republican war widow

The veteran Derry republican and last known surviving spouse of an Irish Volunteer, Mary Ellen O’Doherty, celebrated her 95th birthday this week.

Mrs O'Doherty who is associated with a number of local charitable organisations was awarded Pensioner of the Year at a ceremony in the Guildhall in 1998 shortly before her 90th birthday.

Her husband, Harry ‘baker’ O’Doherty, was a leading member of the Irish Volunteers’ C Company. In the War of Independence he fought in a flying column in Donegal and at the IRA’s headquarters at St. Columb’s College during the Derry riots of the 1920s. He served On the Derry Brigade staff well into the 1930s with the late Neil Gillespie, John Boyle, Sean Dolan, Tommy McGlinchey and Liam Brady.

And he was presented with two medals in recognition of his involvement in the ‘Old IRA’ and the post-treaty conflict. He was also a key figure in the GAA’s revival of the 1920s and ‘30s.

After his death in 1989, Mrs O’Doherty maintained contact with the families of several outstanding republican families including Dan Breen and Tom Barry.

And Dr Nora and Roddy Connolly, daughter and son of the Easter Rising leader James Connolly, visited the O’Doherty’s Derry home.

Mrs O’Doherty is a life-long supporter of traditional Gaelic culture – especially language, music and dancing.

A member of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and an honorary member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Ladies Division, Mrs O’Doherty remains actively involved in a number of organisations including the campaign for repatriation Irish prisoners and she is one of the main patrons of Full Status Now.

She is the mother of Senator Mary K. King, Pat Leo, Anna, Breege, Kevin, Pearse, Deirdre, David and Fionnbarra.

Local residents honoured her at her Crawford Square home last Saturday night (April 26) ahead of her 95th birthday on Monday.
