I contacted "Sophie de St Preux" somewhere around early 2002 and the reply she sent me was virtually a word for word replica of the reply you have posted.
I paid no money over. Then about two-thirds of the way through the seven month period ie. just before the third (lucky) period was due to begin, she suddenly contacted me to say she was removing my details from her file.
