Hey Everyone:

just wanted to say Hi and let you know about this new talk forum!

I want to get started by talking about your concerns about self-defense. What are the keys to developing a good program or what kind of techniques does one need to fully defend themselves?

Let's narrow this topic to "childrens' defense." What kind of methods should one use to protect our children?

Childrens Self Defense......
Depends on the parents and the kid. Can we teach the children to do the resulting damage we teach adults? NO!
We can start at the beginning and mold them to appreciate the arts/self defense by making it fun and full of goals they can achieve. This can result in longer training through early adulthood and a possible return when time and life allows. I won't advocate a blown out knee in a child! I do advocate verbal skills and following the rules. Parents will have to help with the decisions on use of force issues with kids. All for now.....

Good views Ken:

I do not pursue whether or not a child has the "permission" if they can blow the knee. Its been my observation that children to not possess the power or skill to do this effectively. I figure, if they have the capacity to do it, then do so. In this case, the pen is surely mightier than the sword, hell, one can just have the kids jam pencils and pens into various soft regions of the attacker. How one can effectively teach this to children without them doing this at school is a subject I've yet to explore. Maybe the explosive tactic may be the first step in accumulating aggressiveness then worry about ethics later. Maybe just to build up certain reactions based upon threat alone may be necessary. I don't know.

Maybe another consideration is how to avoid the confrontational situation as Ken suggested. One option is that using "code words" to know who is the good guys in reference as to who can pick children up from school. Although, in the army we used code sentences, such that the question would include "x" and the responder would have to answer in a sentence of "y". For example, if the code word for tuesdays is "dollar" and the answer is "donkey," the child may ask the adult, I have only three dollars to spend at the movies. The adult would have to make some sentence such as, "the donkey movie I heard is really good." If the adult fails to know the code, the kid should know this person is conning them. Its also fun for the kids as well.

Hi Marty:

Jokes are totally fine, in reality, when they do attack in mobs they are quite effective. They know to have one grab onto one leg, another hug another leg, and the rest pull you down, real off balancing!

This strategy is really difficult at best to defend, maybe we as adults should apply it

>;- ) yeah i know i. I used to baby sit a lot when i was younger and that what they always did. There was like nothen you could do about it. with a group of seven or more kids there going to be trouble.

I will let Sensei Juan know u asked about him.

just a thought but most of the time the fights kids are goin to get into are with other kids, perhaps 3 years their senior. so what (i know this is not the intent of the art, kids beating kids up... but I was just thinking about it) wouldn't the damage be about the same as if it was an adult/adult? To me to most important things to a child is that martial arts(besides being realy cool) can teach is Respect/honor, not to panic(most important and hardest?), controll, ect...

Children's classes should emphasize awareness. Awareness of their enviroment, dealing with safety issues, bullies, strangers, and what to do when a stranger confronts them. Teach them about unappropriate touching, through cartoons and videos.

Intermes of martial movement teach them the basics so they can build a strong foundation physicaly, but do not teach too much punching and kicking. Make it fun and emphasize building a strong character. As they mature on can emphasize actual martial application.

Children are very impressionable, and look up to what their martial arts instructors' say. Look at their character, and build a strong physical foundation. Teach them that hitting is wrong, that their parents are there to help them. Children may not listen to their parents, but as a martial arts instructor we have the ability to reach the children.
