As some of you may/may not know, I am heading off to Massachusetes at the end of July. For some, this is a painful topic in the sense that many of you might actually miss me...when I think upon this subject, I will miss my friends just as much. In 1994, my instructor, Jack Gibson, suffered losing me when I decided to go into the military. Although I did miss my school, the benefits to our dojo were tremendous: Research into Lin Kong Jing (powerful empty force) chi gong, Shingitai Goshin-Jutsu (John Saylor's school of groundfighting), invaluable training in the military (ok, not so valuable as an infantry soldier, but it was fun crushing things with my Bradley fighting vehicle), training in Wing Chun, and research into American Kenpo Karate.
For me, bringing back what I learned enhanced not just me, but also my teaching style and ability to convey concepts to my students and other instructors of the arts. When I did this, I was just a punk 1st degree black belt. Well, now I'm a punk 5th degree, and there is much more work to be done in our research.
As I see it, the NSI concepts will be spread coast to coast accross the USA. No easy task. With the WRCMA acting as a research arm of NSI, and a federation sanctioning rank and curricula, I think we can improve the NSI teachings by teaching more people. In addition, I hope to get a grassroots campaign of arnis the way WE do it over into New England, very exciting indeed.
Some of my friends think this will be an end to the WRCMA, it will not. Just a beginning. First, we will have this convention, and let the superpowers (Datu Worden and Shihan Annesi) meet and exchange ideas. This is really just like how the big three (Presas, Jay, and Dillman) had so much influence on each other, as well as on students. I see the same kind of beginning.
I also see my best friend, Ken Smith, making his mark this year on the FMA and MA communities. Ken has been influential in his dedication to the arts, very much like a knight. Now this knight is to lead armies...scary stuff for anyone.
For my instructors, this isn't about me...its about the organizations I represent. I want to come back from MA, stronger and more knowledgeable than before. My goal is to become a 5th Dan in Takeshin Karate, Aikijujutsu, and the house art of Seiken Budo. These are considered traditional arts, but I will morph a NSI concept curricula for you guys in due time. I also have a hampering to study kenjutsu and iaido, must be the Japanese part of me working there...
For my students, the more I learn, the more I can teach you. I, as an instructor, am also a student. I take my cues from my instructors: Jack Gibson, Datu Worden, and Shihan Annesi who are always learning more and more, and researching their ass off. They don't wait around for the martial gods to deliver golden nuggets, they dig for them! And, as such, I will do the same...and for my students, I expect you to do the same. One cannot call themselves progressive if you're being fed the material, you gotta research it and test it out.
Bottomline is that I've always been a martial artist. I've got a wife who is just as psycho as me about the arts, and to truly live, we gotta learn. Don't get me wrong, teaching is real fun, but you learn the most working and guiding students on a regular basis.
Ok, now for the projects:
DVD series:
I want to have plans to complete a requirement video series for my arnis program. These will encompass at least 4-5 DVD's, and I will plan to have a DVD on each of the Solo Baston Anyos and Empty hand Anyos.
For the archives, I will make a DVD series of the old Freewind Karate requirements. In addition, we will make the newer (read: Minatani Goshin-Jutsu Karate) requirement lists.
I'm also now in the process of making my own family kata that will include both empty hand and weapon use...nasty.
We're working on a Arnis requirement manual now. I've got about 40% completion on my Sibat booklet. In the works are a self-defense guide covering tactical deployment of modern weaponry (DTL/travel wrench, knife, and baton).
We've got to come up with someone for next year's conference in Spokane. I'm thinking Rich Mooney (the guy who moves people without touching) or Sifu Lamar Davis II, a bad-ass JKD guy...but I'm open for suggestions.
Concepts for a WRCMA camp (which will replace the now defunct Combined Arts Training Camp) and Return of The Battle of the Basin...golly revamped rules for arnis and let's include grappling...hmmmm.
These are just MY projects. Fellow WRCMA members are encouraged to make suggestions. If accepted, the WRCMA will try to raise funds and get the project going. Also, we can help you in the logistics of doing these projects.
Sorry for such a long post, but hey...feel free to write things here for suggestions or research topics or even fond memories, whatever. Cale, you cannot disclose the event in Cheney....!
Thanks everyone,
Corey Minatani
