Subject: WRCMA Projects for 2005

As some of you may/may not know, I am heading off to Massachusetes at the end of July. For some, this is a painful topic in the sense that many of you might actually miss me...when I think upon this subject, I will miss my friends just as much. In 1994, my instructor, Jack Gibson, suffered losing me when I decided to go into the military. Although I did miss my school, the benefits to our dojo were tremendous: Research into Lin Kong Jing (powerful empty force) chi gong, Shingitai Goshin-Jutsu (John Saylor's school of groundfighting), invaluable training in the military (ok, not so valuable as an infantry soldier, but it was fun crushing things with my Bradley fighting vehicle), training in Wing Chun, and research into American Kenpo Karate.

For me, bringing back what I learned enhanced not just me, but also my teaching style and ability to convey concepts to my students and other instructors of the arts. When I did this, I was just a punk 1st degree black belt. Well, now I'm a punk 5th degree, and there is much more work to be done in our research.

As I see it, the NSI concepts will be spread coast to coast accross the USA. No easy task. With the WRCMA acting as a research arm of NSI, and a federation sanctioning rank and curricula, I think we can improve the NSI teachings by teaching more people. In addition, I hope to get a grassroots campaign of arnis the way WE do it over into New England, very exciting indeed.

Some of my friends think this will be an end to the WRCMA, it will not. Just a beginning. First, we will have this convention, and let the superpowers (Datu Worden and Shihan Annesi) meet and exchange ideas. This is really just like how the big three (Presas, Jay, and Dillman) had so much influence on each other, as well as on students. I see the same kind of beginning.

I also see my best friend, Ken Smith, making his mark this year on the FMA and MA communities. Ken has been influential in his dedication to the arts, very much like a knight. Now this knight is to lead armies...scary stuff for anyone.

For my instructors, this isn't about me...its about the organizations I represent. I want to come back from MA, stronger and more knowledgeable than before. My goal is to become a 5th Dan in Takeshin Karate, Aikijujutsu, and the house art of Seiken Budo. These are considered traditional arts, but I will morph a NSI concept curricula for you guys in due time. I also have a hampering to study kenjutsu and iaido, must be the Japanese part of me working there...

For my students, the more I learn, the more I can teach you. I, as an instructor, am also a student. I take my cues from my instructors: Jack Gibson, Datu Worden, and Shihan Annesi who are always learning more and more, and researching their ass off. They don't wait around for the martial gods to deliver golden nuggets, they dig for them! And, as such, I will do the same...and for my students, I expect you to do the same. One cannot call themselves progressive if you're being fed the material, you gotta research it and test it out.

Bottomline is that I've always been a martial artist. I've got a wife who is just as psycho as me about the arts, and to truly live, we gotta learn. Don't get me wrong, teaching is real fun, but you learn the most working and guiding students on a regular basis.

Ok, now for the projects:

DVD series:

I want to have plans to complete a requirement video series for my arnis program. These will encompass at least 4-5 DVD's, and I will plan to have a DVD on each of the Solo Baston Anyos and Empty hand Anyos.

For the archives, I will make a DVD series of the old Freewind Karate requirements. In addition, we will make the newer (read: Minatani Goshin-Jutsu Karate) requirement lists.

I'm also now in the process of making my own family kata that will include both empty hand and weapon use...nasty.

We're working on a Arnis requirement manual now. I've got about 40% completion on my Sibat booklet. In the works are a self-defense guide covering tactical deployment of modern weaponry (DTL/travel wrench, knife, and baton).

We've got to come up with someone for next year's conference in Spokane. I'm thinking Rich Mooney (the guy who moves people without touching) or Sifu Lamar Davis II, a bad-ass JKD guy...but I'm open for suggestions.

Concepts for a WRCMA camp (which will replace the now defunct Combined Arts Training Camp) and Return of The Battle of the Basin...golly revamped rules for arnis and let's include grappling...hmmmm.

These are just MY projects. Fellow WRCMA members are encouraged to make suggestions. If accepted, the WRCMA will try to raise funds and get the project going. Also, we can help you in the logistics of doing these projects.

Sorry for such a long post, but hey...feel free to write things here for suggestions or research topics or even fond memories, whatever. Cale, you cannot disclose the event in Cheney....!

Thanks everyone,

Corey Minatani

I would love WRCMA to bring Tony Blauer down...next year. I have been reading one of his manuels, "Be your own bodyguard" and it is full of well thought out self defense information.

Hi Corey,

First time poster here. Don't forget to let others know that I am coming to the first conference as well. Good luck to you and Betsy on your upcoming move (I hate moving!) Even though you'll be off to Massassachusettes, you'll still be at the conference?

Yours,
Dan Anderson

Thanks Dan:

Yes, we will be updating the full list of participants, the main four headliner guys who are demo/instructing are Shihan Annesi, SM Dan Anderson, Datu Kelly Worden, and Master Ken Smith.

I will be updating the list as time goes on, also, we are in the process of making the website address change to www.wrcma.org ... yeah!

Hey everyone,

I have several goals for this year, the first of them is that I want to have a student base of 40 full timers, that would double my current numbers. Aside from picking up a second Bachelor's degree and starting a Master's in Social Work program, I am hoping to expand my fledgling video production business to be an all out force to be reckoned with. I would like to produce a DVD series of the Modern Arnis requirements, The Freewind Minatani Goshin Jutsu requirements, perhaps a grappling series with Senior Guro Ken Smith, not to mention a Spokane Seminar Series with Datu Worden, Gene Villa, and Sensei Corey Minatani. My biggest project will be doing the WRCMA Conference series. I plan to do my own DVD series (mainly for students' benefit). I also hope to support the WRCMA online College course and maybe help team teach a segment. I will have Datu Worden over again in October, and hope to have Guro Ken Smith over as soon as possible. I, also, hope to finish a website for Spokane Modern Arnis. Overall, I just want to do more writing and various projects that will legitimize what I am doing, and add some credibility as I begin to showcase my skills.
I will hopefully finish my Shodan in Goju-Ryu and further my standings in the Aiki-Ju-Jutsu/Bushido-kai world, in an effort to bridge the gap between the Traditional and Progressive Arts in my own expression of the Martial Sciences.

Plus, aside from all this I will have to figure out how to balance working 3 jobs, going to school full time, personally training, and raising my 6 year old nephew of whom I recently gained custody. This will be a busy year.....Oh Yeah!.......and I'd like to spend some time with my lovely wife Sharon.

'Nuff Said

I hear you Eric, very hard man to get down to these sort of things. We have had many votes for his appearance, but his duties of his very large organization keep him from making solid commitments to the WRCMA...

But, we are planning the conference in 2005 for MA, and we're looking to get some exposure in Black Belt and Inside Kung Fu magazines...going big time...!

Thanks for your input...

Since you can't have sensei Mack maybe you could get Sue Young or Sensei terry stone. Do you know when you will have the new requirements on video, how much they would be and would you also have them available on VHS.

Hey Eric:

Are you grilling me this week or what? Anyway Sue Young is the best candidate because one, she outranks Terry Stone, two, she's my buddy, and three, Terry Stone and I will probably not ever see eye to eye since we were commericial rivals, but nice try.

Mr. Stone is a very talented individual, I've always liked him, but he tends to be snobbish in the sense of not participating in group events outside Shudokan Karate. Whereas Ms. Young, has worked with the WRCMA. And off the record, she's better lookin' than Terry...

Sorry for "grilling" you this week. How much would the videos of the new freewind requirements cost?

Cale, will you have a VHS series besides the DVD series? Good luck with your video production business.
