Often a response I get when training people with weapons, is "where would I use this in real life." This usually comes about when learning stickwork or staffwork and in specific against sinawali or weaving patterns with the above mentioned weapons.

It does follow logic of a laymen, that if on the world I won't have sticks or staff, why train in the stupid things? So let's discuss or debate whether or not stick arts are applicable to the real world. Be sure to include your context (such as military, office worker, security, etc) so that we can better understand your position.

I think that the "stick-staff-knife" arts are verry applicable in the street. I am in private security, so I carry an Asp baton at work. An Asp baton, when deployed, is just like a steel escrima stick. Sticks are also everywhere in the world in disguise. Pieces of wood laying around, car antennas, even adjustment rods on blinds. As far as the staff training goes, staffs are also everywhere in the everyday world in disguise. They are broomsticks, rhee bars, pieces of wood, anything that even come close to mimicing a staff. As far as knives go, I carry a knife everywhere, so I see no arguement against knife training.

I also believe that all weapons learned in all of the martial arts have substitutes found in everyday life. Training with the actual weapon only lays the groundwork.

Remember sticks train your muscle memory for adapting the same techniques to many other weapons, sword, knife, empty hand...etc...
