Forms is not a dynamic training method to prepare oneself for combat. If you want to learn how to fight you need to train against someone who is fighting back. Please check out a article called train smarters at www.jkdu.co.za under the articles menu. BAsically it comes down to there is unlimited amount of techniques in the Martial Arts today with limited time to train it in. We need to prioritise and work towards achieving our goals.

Enjoy

Hey, in my opion katas are great tools but I think that they teach one to rely on kicks, punches and various blocks. Don't get me wrong, this is a great thing. But when all the striking skills one has comes from training katas they miss other strikes and applications like head- butts, elbow and knee smashes from the clinch, low line kicks and/or limb destruction.
So sure when real life situations are taken into account and how rapidly they can change into something new I think katas may be useful for combat.
