I have read a lot on aikido and practiced some aiki-ju-jutsu and I can't tell the difference. Is aiki-ju-jutsu softer than aikido or what because it seems like they both have the same tchniques just different concepts and principles.

I have been studying more about the history of aikido and found out that the founder of aikido studied Daito-ryu under the takeda family. So I have a question that I hope someone knows the answer to. Does all "aiki" systems have Daito-ryu lineage?

All aiki systems have jujutsu lineage, because aiki is based on solid foundation of jujutsu. Do all aiki systems stem from Daito, scholars are divided. I would say some sort of lineage is in order, but some people make up stuff, or are soley jujutsu based, put on a hakama, and call themselves aiki-jujutsu.

aikido is a direct decendant from Daito, no question...

the difference between DO and JUTSU is this DO = practice without emphasis on application, but for inner spiritual satisfaction

jutsu means military application, so the jutsu methods all emphasize practical combat applications.

ju do = sportive method
ju jutsu = combat application

karate do = sportive, non combative in nature study of kata
karate jutsu = mostly focuses on application of kata; bunkai and waza

iai do = practice of drawing sword
iai jutsu = combat applications of quick draw sword

etc etc etc.

Great information Rich! It brings to mind some questions for whom ever wants to answer.

Did these two paths evolved separately or did one split from the other? Was one considered unconventional or nontraditional originally ? How about now? How can they both be traditional when they are opposites?

Corey knows where I am going with this as we have had for some time an private on-going discussion of Traditional vs Nontraditional.

Yes, there was a schism that occurred after the samurai were divested of their right to wear the daisho in public in the latter part of the 19th century. They could no longer use their weapons in the Jutsu way, because col. colt
and Mt Howitzer took care fo those things. Many of them wished to retain their skills, but only for self gratification. there fore you have the naissance of the DO
methods. The samurai, and those who wore swords for combat turned their skills inward for competition, Kenjutsu became Ken do, naginata jutsu became naginata do ( mostly women IIRC), etc etc.

There is who dynamic behond the change from jutsu to do, and if I went on, it would fill a book.

suffice it to say that when the swords were on no use militarily, they became useful mentally.

Bill:

The difference is not much. Politics definitely makes its mark on the difference. Jujutsu is a pretty loose term in the sense of a style or group of techniques. But historically, jujutsu is the base system for aiki related systems. If I remember correctly, Omiya suggests that there are three methods of technique in aikijujutsu: jujutsu, aikijujutsu, and aiki no jutsu (aiki techniques). Many aiki systems do their techniques with a jujutsu feel. Many jujutsu systems do their technqies with an aiki feel (e.g. Hakkoryu Jujutsu). There are aiki systems that concentrate solely on aiki no jutsu technques (e.g. Roppokai (they do not exclusively work on aiki no jutsu techniques, but they are world famous for their aiki not jutsu)), and some aiki arts do all three (e.g. Takeshin Aikijujutsu).

So there are no real hard line definitions here. Even Daito Ryu was called and referred to as jujutsu early on, then became aikijujutsu to delineate themselves from the rest of the pack.

Hope this helps...

I know Wally and his son Leon. Both wonderful, warm, nice people. That being said; Wally and Leon can both turn it on when it comes down to twisting you into a pretzel. Leon has also felt my infamous Donkey Bite a few times as well:)

Leon lives in UK now, and I have not seen Wally for a while, and I believe he might be getting into retirement mode. I could be wrong however. If any of you all see them;
give em a shout from me:)
