Great information Rich! It brings to mind some questions for whom ever wants to answer.

Did these two paths evolved separately or did one split from the other? Was one considered unconventional or nontraditional originally ? How about now? How can they both be traditional when they are opposites?

Corey knows where I am going with this as we have had for some time an private on-going discussion of Traditional vs Nontraditional.

Yes, there was a schism that occurred after the samurai were divested of their right to wear the daisho in public in the latter part of the 19th century. They could no longer use their weapons in the Jutsu way, because col. colt
and Mt Howitzer took care fo those things. Many of them wished to retain their skills, but only for self gratification. there fore you have the naissance of the DO
methods. The samurai, and those who wore swords for combat turned their skills inward for competition, Kenjutsu became Ken do, naginata jutsu became naginata do ( mostly women IIRC), etc etc.

There is who dynamic behond the change from jutsu to do, and if I went on, it would fill a book.

suffice it to say that when the swords were on no use militarily, they became useful mentally.
