Although comets orbit elliptically around their parent star, certain gravitational alighnments earlier in the trajectory can effect the orbit and cause it to degrade. This was spectacularly demonstrated when the comet Levy-Shoemaker passed too close to Jupiter and ended up crashed into it, leaving a hole roughly the size of our whole planet in the upper atmosphere.
