alright, one last post before i go to bed. flux core is good for general purpose, like anything between say 1/8" and 3/8". mig can go from 24ga to around 1/2" (with a few passes and some practice) mig makes a far cleaner bead, as there is no flux to mess up the surface, and the flux also makes bubbles and craters in the bead if you are not careful, as with MIG there is hardly any bubbles in the bead. one consideration for choosing between these types is location. you cant weld with gas on a windy day or anywhere where there is a draft, the gas just gets blown away. flux core is good for outside welding.
