Well crossing over from stick to MIG is like comparing apples to oranges. Both do the same job, but different methods of getting there. Depending on the rod your using if you don't know what to look for you can mistake the puddle for the flux while welding. That's the first thing you will want to learn. Running Mig hard wire you don't have the problem because of cover gas, unless you're running fluxcore, then you will have a simular effect I've been welding for over 20 years and started with stick. Back in the day they didn't have wire feed building drilling rigs. It was done with SMAW. I remember the first time I welded with MIG, I didn't know how to make it weld. It's funny now but then it wasn't. Setting heat and wire speed is tricky if you never done it. Knowing what to look for while setting it. If I was buying a welding machine to learn how to weld, I would spend the money and get one that's top of the line, and capable of what needs done. Cheap will do nothing but frustrate you and discourage you from wanting to do it. So what ever you decide to learn first make sure you know the machine and how to set it up and learning how to get comfortable in positioning yourself while welding.
