A lot has been written and discussed on this message board about methadone and MMT. For decades it has been the only treatment modality available for opiate addiction. Yes, it's addicting too. And it does seem like it's a government condoned addiction. But for quite a few people it was the only way to stay out of jail and to function normally - have a job, a family, etc. It certainly has it's negatives while it has a few positives. Until we have a medical system and a legal system that will define addiction as a medical problem and really put forth efforts to help people kick the habit, there will be a need for methadone, Subutex and Suboxone. It takes more than the simple will to quit using opiates. My daughter quit methadone cold turkey in a prison cell, but that didn't prevent her from returning to society and taking up heroin again. The change came when she decided she wanted to stop...only then could the addiction be broken because it was her decision. It was an action she willfully and deliberately made. She did pull it off and has remained drug free. But it's terribly difficult to do if you don't have a support system. Many addicts have been dropped by their families and certainly society. You can't have a good chance at stopping without some backup and support. That's why so many turn to methadone. It's the only support system they have. Until we change this we can't get rid of methaodne treatment.
