Some people need to be on methadone for life. Just because you successfully detoxed at a point in your life when you were immune to relapse, doesn't mean that is the path that everyone should take. If you could really see some of the Heroin users who have gone from spending *hundreds* of dollars a day and doing *whatever* it takes to get the money, now functioning as responsible people who have a normal life! Finally! All thanks to this drug and the people who administer it. -And whom you demonize.
Then- you might (hopefully) see the error of your ways in promoting the demise of the treatment which is a last resort to many. The last thing heroin addicts need is a holier-than-thou recovering drug addict now biting the hand that fed her for those years she didn't have the means to successfully detox. Have you ever thought that maybe Methadone Maintenance gave you the ability to finally get to a place where you *could* detox and not relapse?
OK- I grant you that methadone is not easy to leave. But who ever said you needed to quit? Methadone has never shown to be detrimental in any way shape or form. In fact, one of our greatest presidents was a Methadone patient. Yes, John F. Kennedy actively used Methadone while he was in the white house. The list goes on. Many successful people who use Methadone might not have been able to achieve their success without the help.
I implore you to now change the focus of that book. I'm sure you will find many more people to write about when you're looking for the positives of this wonder-drug.
