On the issue of the parent's responsibility for the child's addiction:

I myself was a herion addict. I started at 18 and was lucky enough to be salvaged by my parents at 21. I regret an awful lot about that period of time, but one thing I cannot do is blame my parents. I distinctly remember making that conscious decision to do something that I knew was wrong and destructive. I also think that its extremely unlikely that you will find anyone in the US who can honestly say they think drugs are not harmful. I'm talking mostly about the harder drugs out there, but we all know about the consequences of even something legal like alcohol. Bottom line, in my opinion, is that it might be easier to believe that an addict is made before he/she's 15 years old, and that nothing could be done because it was too late. I think what really happens however, is that inexplicably, some of us make that choice to take the wrong path for reasons that are our own. Personally, I am thankful that my parents were there when I reached out for help, and that they got me into treatment. I've been clean almost a year, and I still have my problems, but at least I'm not using anymore. So I thank them for helping me when they could, and I certainly don't blame them for things I chose to do.

On a quick endnote, I've been scouring the web lately for any kind of forum where one could talk to other recovering people and basically help out or get help as time requires. I've found NA inadequate in my area for this, so if anyone has a suggestion, please e-mail me.
