Jennifer:

You have greatly misunderstood the argument, of which I am not really a part. The good doctor acted as if parents had caused the addiction and actually gave incorrect advice. I work as a volunteer on behalf of substance abuse disorders, and I have never blamed anyone or anything, other than my adult children, for the problems they have caused. I have devoted the past 5 years to publicly working on behalf of those who suffer from addiction. Many physicians have no training in addiction and don't understand that renewing prescriptions is going to cause problems. Many patients are looking for pain relief and end up physically addicted. Better monitoring could help that. More education, from the doctor to the patient, would be helpful. Then, when patients do become addicted, the physicians don't know how to treat the addiction and there aren't enough detox programs for those who need them. Most physicians are clueless about addiction! If you want some good information and personal experiences, please email me. I would be pleased to help you in your research.
