IAMSHAMAN wrote an excellent response...for the most part. Once again the integrity of the parent was brought into question. Once again the decision of a child is blamed on poor parenting. Addiction is destructive enough without implying that if only the parents had provided more instruction, more supervision, or listened to their child more attentively, the child would have made a different decision. Without a doubt there are some very troubled families in our communities. There are parents who don't spend time with their children; don't listen to their concerns; don't have discussion about issues; and don't care. But there are also parents out here who DO care; who DO have discussions; who DO listen to their children. Sometimes children are so headstrong or determined that they refuse to listen. Some of these children have underlying brain disorders such as ADD, ADHD, affective mood disorders, depression, compulsive/obsessive, anxiety, etc. Many of these children have gone undiagnosed because the medical community has failed them. Some have been medicated since they were three or four. There are many reasons why a child might decide to do illegal drugs. Most of these reasons have little to do with the parents. Read the posts by those addicted. They all start out with "I came from a good family. My parents loved me and were good parents." Parents struggling with an addicted child are in enough pain and agony. They don't need to have guilt heaped upon them, too.
