You are correct that other issues have been addressed faster. It has been a long struggle to educate our "leaders" and the public. That is why I have been so vocal for the past 10 years. When the heroin problem hit Carroll County we were all in shock and most people were saying "Not My Kid!" We weren't prepared to hear that our children were using drugs. Most parents, like myself, had thought that we had "drug proofed" our children by discussing the issues with them and by living in a rural community. The old stereotypes about drugs and addiction put blame on the parents and many families were unwilling to come forward. When the people who need the programs are hiding because of stigma, it's hard to convince the community that a program is needed. It's taken several years to get the commuity's attention. County government has finally heard the message and things are being done. Yes, I would like to see a women's shelter built as well. But, change comes slowly. I am encouraged by the work that all the people in the community have done. It's never fast enough. But we have made a start. Believe it or not, Carroll County is in the forefront in collaborative work toward providing services for addiction. The wheels turn very slowly. I still invite anyone interested in addiction services to attend our meetings. We need you to help promote our cause. We need individuals and families to work on providing programs for our loved ones. You can't sit back and expect other people to make things happen. It takes a grassroots effort to accomplish goals. Never undersetimate the power of a group of mothers!!
