I have a similar problem with my granddaughter (8 years old)and her mother. I sought counseling to deal with the issue of visitation with the mother, who is a heroin addict and alcoholic. She comes in and out of her daughter's life with little regard for what it does to her. The counselor told me not to deny visitations with the mother. Of course, if she's high that's different. It was a wise decision because my granddaughter loves her mother, no matter what she does. My granddaughter needs to have her mother in her life, even if it is sporadic. I say, let your son join in the holiday celebration. He is sick! It takes many attempts before one can stay clean and sober. It is a long process. Don't enable him but don't throw him totally out of the family picture unless he uses at family gatherings or abuses family members in some way.
