Having worked with children and families for 38 years and having been involved with the field of substance use and treatment for over 12 years, I can safely say that not all children who use drugs do so because their parents didn't care about them, eat dinner with them, talk to them or take them to church. There are parents who do everything right but they have a child who makes a bad decision or who has a brain disorder (mental health issue) that hasn't been appropriately addressed by the medical community. It is too simplified to place the blame for all substance use on bad parenting. Yes, there are parents who don't care about their children. Yes, there are parents with poor parenting skills. Yes, parents make mistakes. Not every child who grows up in a dysfunctional household abuses drugs. Many make it through adolescence quite fine in spite of lousy parents. Just like many adolescents growing up in a loving and attentive household use drugs. It's simply overstated, untrue and without merit to blame parents for everything a child does wrong.
