In reply to: BonnieWindsor 's message, "old shotgun" on 15:50:47 01/25/03 Sat

I also have a texas ranger shotgun,it belonged to my grandfather. It's thought to be from the early 1800's.
There are no serial no. that I have been able to find.

"long tom" as It's been called, is all I know of this weapon. I would be glad also to know any thing about this single shot 3 foot plus long barrel weapon of history.

I have a 12 gage shot gun with a hammer to the side. You flip the firing pin over to the right side to put a shell in!!It has #4474 and ELG in a circle on the side of the barrel! Looks like ZULU on top of the barrel!!Can you tell me something about the gun?

Merlin - When you get lemons, make lemonade, and when given obsolete military single-shot rifles, make sporting shotguns. The ELG in an oval indicates it was made in Belgium prior to 1893 (unless there is a crown over the oval, then it was made sometime later), and approved for black powder ammunition. Many of these conversions were only marginally safe when made and should never be used with modern shells.

I have a double barrel 16 gauge that was my granddad's. It has the ELG in an oval with the crown above it and has belgium stamped between the barrels. The mfg's. name on it is HENRY ARMS COMPANY. Is there anything else you can tell me about it.

I contacted the Henry Arms Company, but have not gotten a reply. I would be interested in replies you receive if they help determine age and manufacture location of the gun.

I have a Henry 12 gage also and I've been told it dates somewhere between 1870 to 1890 but that's all I have.
Have you heard anything from anyone else about it?

Your father's shotgun should be priceless to you, but a lot of dealers would have offered even less than $50. Dealers sell nearly-new utility singleshots in my neighborhood for only $80-$100. There are very few collectors who would be interested in your gun unless it was absolutely like-new and unfired. A shooter (if you can find one who wants a singleshot) would prefer a newer gun at about the same price. If you wanted to sell, your best buyer would be someone who just wanted to hang an old gun over the fireplace as a decoration. They usually prefer open-hammer doubles, but the extra-long barrel of the Long Tom might attract a decorator, but even they will expect it to be inexpensive.

Samson - Is it actually marked "Long Tom" or do you just call it that because of it's length? Long Tom was a trade name used by Sears Roebuck on shotguns made by J. Stevens Arms Co, c. 1920-1948. I have no reference listing the Avery Metal Works.

My father has a Long Tom shotgun that belonged to my Great Uncle. However, it's a 16 guage. It's in pretty good condition. We have no idea what it is worth. Anyone have any ideas?

Dad also has a nickel plated pistol that my G-Uncle owned that has a date stamp of I think 1888 or 1889. Unfortunately, I can't remember the details about the pistol.

A single shot Long Tom would probably bring $75 if complete and functional. Can't help with the pistol without those details.
