Severely Injured SF K9 Handler -- Bill Cummings, Sat, Jul 02 2005, 5:57:16 PDT
Good Morning and happy July 4th to all!

I received this message from SSgt Jon Sarabia, one of my “Adopted Pups” and he asked me to pass this along to all of our guys.

There was a handler injured this last week. Send this out to as many people as you can. Jon

Here’s the info on the fellow handler who was injured in Iraq.

Attention All,

Below is the message sent out on one of our fellow SF K-9 handlers stationed at Peterson AFB, CO. Take a moment today and say a prayer for TSgt Jamie Dana as she battles for her life after driving over an Improvised Explosive Device in Iraq this weekend.

“On 25 Jun (local AM), TSgt Jamie DANA (MWD handler from Peterson AFB CO) was traveling in an Armored Vehicle (type unknown) when they hit an IED (MWD was killed). The vehicle flipped three times prior to stopping. She has massive head trauma, lacerations to her face, massive pelvic damage, internal bleeding, and substantial damage to her organs. She was transferred to Balad where she had an emergency surgery on her spleen and to repair the right side of her diaphragm and stop the bleeding. She is listed in critical condition. She is scheduled to depart from Balad at approximately 0000hrs EDT. The are going to try to ensure that she is stabilized enough to travel stateside, but her status may not allow it. Her spouse and commander have been notified and they are working EFMTs for the husband. Casualty is waiting until they know if she is going to be transferred immediately or held at Landstuhl prior to having the husband travel.”

Update: Got a call from my old unit this a.m. She's still pretty bad...on 80% life support. They're flying her to Walter Reid here in DC. Husband is a cop assigned to Cheyenne Mountain.

Donations are being solicited to assist the family in traveling to Germany to be with TSgt Jamie Dana. Information has been received that her canine partner was just a little shaken and is doing fine.

Jon has asked that any donations be sent directly to:

In addition, if you have any questions about the incident or the TSgt’s updated condition, please contact SSgt Jon Sarabia at:

Thanks for your time and please consider this as helping one of “our own”!

Bill Cummings

I got some new new's today from an officer at Peterson. She has been upgraded from critical to serious and will be moved to Walter Reed tomorow. We are still collecting donations to help off set the costs for the family.
