I was stationed at NKP from 6/3/67 to 6/3/68 as a Security Police Supervisor (SSGT). During my time there I saw 55 gallon drums of agent orange in the bomb dump and the open supply storage area. For some period of time, probably a TDY assignment, a Ranch Hand unit was stationed on the base. They would transfer the contents of the drums to a larger container on a trailer right beside the gate shack of the bomb dump. I had Agent Orange spilled on me from those transfers on several occasions. At some point the base was sprayed with agent orange to expand the size of the base and build a new runway. This was around July 1967. At the time of the spraying the runway consisted of PSP, the kind with holes in it. After the base was sprayed it seemed as if the jungle just disappeared right before your eyes. I asked a Red Horse guy clearing the area with a bulldozer how the jungle was dying so fast and he told me that a plane had sprayed it with something to kill the plant life. Shortly after a new runway was laid down, it also was metal(more solid) that looked like aluminum siding only a lot stronger. It wasn't strong enought to support a Boeing 707 military version cargo plane fully loaded with supplies because one landed one day and the metal folded up around the tires. Soon therafter, construction was begun on a permanent runway farther out trom the two different metal runways. Red Horse had to dig down fifteen to twenty feet to dig out the soil that turned to jelly when it got wet.

I was also an instructor at Lackland AFB in 1963 & 1964 in the Sentry Dog Program before transferring to the Basic Air Police School where I stayed until I went to Thailand in 1967.

With a background in sentry dogs the commander asked me to build the first dog kennel at NKP. It was just off of the main road through the base, past the open supply area heading toward the bomb dump on the right. I built the kennels the same as the ones at Lackland with the dog house mounted off the ground with a round pole where the dog could be chained and still be able to run around his/her area. I don't think it was ever used because someone in Red Horse had a betten idea and finally got around to that project. What a waste. I can't tell you how many bulldozers I borrowed, truckloads gravel I pilfered and chain link fencing I scrounged. Do you remember if the one I built was still standing?

When I got back from Southeast Asia in 1968 and got spit on by war protestors as I got off the plane in San Francisco I decieed that eight years in the USAF was enough and I didn't want to go back to Southeast Asia to be away from my two small children again. The decision was a very good decision in that I went to school at The University of Texas at Austin and earned a degree in Accounting. I have had a good working career.

I hope this can help you with a claim. I have subbmitted a claim for agent orange exposure and had it denied. The government denies that we were in Thailand and were certainly not involved it the war. If you know of anyone from my time period that could help my cause, I would appreciate it.

Check with Kurt Pressman or Bill Cimmings. They sent out a memo about chemicals used at all bases in Thailand. I was at Korat 71-72 and NKP 74-74. Thanks Warren
