Subject: 12th SPS Phantom Flight in Cam Rahn 1970

I looked at the patches on my dad's jungle shirt today, and found it on another site. He was with the 12th SPS in Cam Rahn in 70-71. The patch on the other side showed the phantom. Does anyone remember a Tim Jones or his dog, Gerry? Thanks again in advance.

Hi D, I am Buz, I served with the 12th Tactical Fighter wing out of Cam Rahn Bay in 69 and 70. One of my clts friends was in the securtity Squadron that your dad was in. I was in the Civil Engineers, a squadron of hootches just behind the 12th security. Airman Frank Rutkowski from Dickson City Pa near Scranton, passd on a few years ago at the age of about 55. We were school mates and your dad may have known him while he was there. I up on Station with Frank at the 50 mm gun emplacement with his Dog many a night. The 13 months I was there, we got rocketed 85 times base alerts were endless. For you see, it was the year after the great TET ( NEW YEAR ) offnsive that took place when the North Vietnamese infiltrated the country in numbers. The patches your Dad has on his green Nam Fatigues, depict that he was part of base security Dog handler and that he was charged with Guarding the Air Base and it's Aircraft. At that time, the 558th Tac Fighter wing was operational and flying many sorties a day as well as the 12th Tac Fighter wind and also many support aircraft alog with a Navy Facility on the Base.

I worked as a Power plant operator, maintaining and operating many small generators on the base that gve emergency lighting and lit the Viatal areas of the base and supplied emergency power to the flightline and many other important areas of te base. I Hospital, Mess, Civil Engineering shops that kept the base operational. I was also off on Temporary duty to other bases in the area from time to time. Like Tuey Hoa, Nha Trang, Ban me Taut, Phan Rang. Delivering parts and supplies and assistance needed from ours, the largest base in Viet Nam. I loshearing and was removed from Combat and high noic level areas. I went to work in the electrical shop, was the squadron Post Office NCo in charge and also the night shift NCO in charge at the BASE Postal Operation. I worked on interdicition if pornography, illegal paraphanaalia and drugs through the mails. I received the Air Force Commendation Medal for my service in the postal field. I returned home and was promoted to Staff Sgt ad trained into the real property management field for my last 18 months at Mc Guire AFB in NJ. For 4 months after my arrival, I had no job assignment and was placed as thNON COMMISSIONED OFFICER in charge of the buriel details in Pa, NJ, NY, Ct and was head of the Honor Guard buring the kids that died in the servieir country. I left the AF in 1971 and worked as a Utilities manager and stationary Engner for Met life computer center, controlling the power and climat for buildings housing computer systems. For the next 28 years of my life, I worked as a Police Officer. I retired on a heart dliy and later became a 100 % disabled Vet Agent Orange Related. bout 18 months ago I was diagnosed with Pancretic Cancer with a Metastisis to the Liver and although I should have been dead in 6 months, I am here writing you from the good graces of fine doctors who work God's mircles their hands... I do hope this helps you a bit. Both Frank Rutkowski and his brother Kieth are dead, Kieth a few years later from agent orange diseases.Kieth was 2 years older than Frank and I. Your Dad should have known Frank Rutkowski from Pa as they were their at the same time. There is no doubt that your Dad and I had eye contact at least while were were there as our squadrons were like the house next door. God Bless and I hope I helped some. A.P. "Buz " Wrobel
