PLEASE HELP. I have researched (with help of handed down records) a particular line of my family (Batson) back to the first one in this country. Here is the problem.
My grandaddy (Ross Howard Batson b. 4/27/1921 d12/7/2001) swore that we were Cherokee. His living sister denies this fact. Since he visited the reservation often until later in life I tend to believe his story. His living sister claims that there may be Indian, but denies Cherokee. She was a child when my grandaddy left home, and is the only remaining relative. My family is from NC, but traces back to VA. I have met many people on genology boards under Batson claiming/reseraching this same branch.
Now my grandaddy's parents: Mother - Annie Lou Holton (buried under name Batson, but listed on death records as Hopson) 5/7/1902-12/30/1991. Father - Santford Ross Batson (4/27/1900-6/11/1949.)
Annie's parents: Enoch Tyson Holton (1865-1946) and Julia Ann Caton (1877-1957). Now here is where the story gets confusing. Julia is said to have been the full blood Cherokee. Another instance it was her mother. (Confused yet?)
Julia's parents: Jesse Bryan Caton and Mary Jane Leary.
Now here is the other wildcard. From old photos and some hunches, I think that there is another tribe in there as well. My great-great grandfather Sanford Chaffin Batson (father to Santford Ross Batson) (b.1852. married 5/30/1881) married a Virgina Dare Harris. I believe (as do a few other Batson decendants) that she was Indian. There are many Harris' listed on the Dawes Chicksaw rolls. But Virigina has been a brick wall for me.
