I am loking for info on my gg grandmother's family. She was born in 1856 in Kentucky according to an 1880 census of Maries County Johnson Township Missouri under her married name of Bair. The story is that she was seen with two indians in a settlers store and the storekeeper asked about her as she had light colored skin and blue eyes. The one indian said something to the other calling him Chief Rains and they quickly left. The settlers wanted the child away from the indians but were afraid of them. Dr. Archibald Scott who rode with the cavalry (undocumented) was a physician and was friends with the indians. They gave him the girl (about age 5 or 6)and he and his wife Susan took her and raised her. Supposedly Dr. Scott got her somewhere around the Iowa-Missouri border. Dr. Scott adopted her and she went by Alice Scott. She had a locket on her neck with the name Rains in it (could have been spelled Raines). She had 3 children and died in Missouri about 1882 of whooping cough.
The name Chief Rains was mentioned a lot while I was growing up. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
