If you have seen any of the links below, you already know there is a great deal of controversy over Malachi Watts and that family, most of it originated only by Jerri Chasteen. I have never researched it nor have I closely examined Jerri's objections to the claims of Watts family members that they should have been enrolled.
If you would like professional help with this research and this question, please contact me. There is one thing that I believe, and that is that for every Cherokee that came on the Trail of Tears (who make up the majority in Cherokee of Tahlequah rolls today) there were three that didn't. So, if there is a story of Indian blood in the family, there probably was Indian blood. Enrollment for those who did not fall into the preferred categories (signers of early treaties, for instance, or their relatives)are difficult to obtain. However, one may, still, prove or approach proof of Indian blood and substantiate it with DNA testing.
