The indexes at genealogy.com and seriously difficult to use because the administrators there did not make them flexible enough to include soundexes of names and to search by first names and other keywords. Every time I use them I murmur about them. So, I subscribe to ancestry.com (it was actually my first choice) so that I can have access to all the census indexes. But I use ancestry most often because of the flexibility of its search engine. When I have to look in 1900 and 1910 (which ancestry has not yet finished indexing), honestly, I groan.
I often use the "Find the name on a page of the census" feature in genealogy to scan for the name I need. At the bottom of the list of hits, also, there's a little search engine wherein you can write the first name of the person you are seeking which will take you to the given name in a long list such as Baker, Johnson and other more common names.
Having said all this against genealogy.com, I must add, to be fair, that I love their census images more than those of ancestry.com because, somehow, they have removed the background color of the old paper which shows on ancestry.com as gray (which uses a lot of printer toner, over time).
Names on the Eastern and Western Cherokee rolls represent only about 1/3 to 1/2 of all those who were of Cherokee blood. Estimates vary but judging from the large numbers of persons in VA, NC, SC, GA, AL, MS, TN, MO, AR, KS, TX and KY who are now seeking information about their ancestors, those who were "incarcerated" in the Indian Territory and those who remained in the East and now form the tribe in western NC are only a portion.
Many new, smaller Cherokee tribes are now forming in various parts of the country and clamoring to gain Federal recognition. They will often accept your genealogy and sign you up but I caution you to be very careful. Some of them rather aggressively seek donations. I have the impression that some are formed by individuals who want to be supported by these donations; others are being formed by honest individuals truly interested in establishing accurate base rolls.
