In WWII the railway system from Bombay to Calcutta would have been the route your father took; on from Calcutta to Parbatipur was normal gauge; here all was transhipped onto a metre-gauge line - a relic of the Assam tea plantation shipping route - which 'wandered up the Brahmaputra Valley to the ferry at Pandu, 450 miles from Calcutta'. Wagons were then manhandled onto barges for the crossing and then re-arranged into a train again on the other side. For the central Assam destination the terminus was at Dimapur, if going north another 200 miles and you arrived at Ledo. I suspect your father would have gone to Dimapur and then on to Dinjan by army transport. Hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your trip - or hope it went well!
