My Dad (Carroll L. Winther) flew the "Hump" and I am certainly interested. I live in Green Bay, WI not too far from Oshkosh and the EAA, and have noticed the C-47 parked outside the exhibit hall. Reminds me of my Dad every time I drive by.

My Dad passed away in July of 2001. Sadly, we were separated for many years and I was never able to learn much detail about his service. He is listed on the manifest for the 3rd Combat Cargo Group, Bond Project Squadron A-5, and deployed from Texas to Florida and East to India. An incredible accomplishment in primitive aircraft. I do know that his missions included supply drops to Merrills Marauders. Regarding the "Hump", he did say that he flew through the Himalayas, not over them.

Among his belongings, I have a fairly complete set of Class A dress including the "Bus Driver" cap, and two sets of tropical "Pinks". All are in nearly mint condition, my Grandmother saved them for all these years and they have been passed on to me. There are also a couple of magazines from his days as a flight cadet and pilot trainee. Interesting stuff, some with signatures just like a high school yearbook.

He was awarded the DFC with Cluster and the Air Medal w/3 Clusters. The accomplishments of the Hump pilots is truly an unsung tale. I'd like to hear more as this project unfolds. Please keep in touch.
