Subject: Why paganism?

I read "In gods we trust" (Melb. Weekly Bayside May 14 - 20 2008). Yes we know that European pantheism (many gods) was destroyed by Middle Eastern monotheism (one god). Ibn Warraq (author of "Why I am not a Muslim") once quipped in his critique of pantheism "monotheism is in its turn doomed to subtract one more god and become atheism". Gavin Andrew says pagans look to see "the inherent beauty and complexity of nature". Does one really need gods to do this? As Warraq implies why not subtract god(s) entirely and simply become naturists (nudists)? Do we really need religious ritual to appreciate nature? Or is paganism simply "sexier" by offering a titillating compromise between archaic, meaningless, sexually oppressive established religion and real sexual freedom?
